Most of the coins are used everyday as money, but some are made with extra effort, creativity and a high content pure gold, platinum or silver. In 1986, the United States started minting a silver bullion coin they called the American Silver Eagle. This coin is based off of Adolph A. Weinman’s half dollar coin from 1916 called the “Walking Liberty.” This coin was minted by the United States from 1916 – 1947. There are three versions of the Silver Eagle coin. The first version is the regular bullion version. This version is available from authorized coin dealers and bullion dealers. This version comes with a protective case and a certificate of authenticity from the Mint. The third version is the uncirculated or burnished version. This version is the most recent version and has the “W” mint mark and is struck on burnished specialty blanks.
Widely sought after by coin collectors and precious metal collectors, the Silver Eagle definitely is. Collectors consider this coin to be the “modern day silver dollar” and often pay close attention to series dates, including hard to find anniversary issues.
